Community and the importance of Boys and Young Men's Development

There’s a growing conversation about boys and young men—and not all of it is helpful. In the absence of strong, supportive communities, many are turning to online spaces that offer certainty, identity, and belonging, but often at a cost. What’s commonly referred to as the manosphere can pull young men toward narrow ideas of masculinity, disconnection, and sometimes resentment.
But the real issue isn’t just what they’re finding online—it’s what they’re missing offline.
Boys and young men need real community. They need spaces where they feel seen, known, and valued. Spaces where they can take risks, build competence, and experience challenge alongside support. Without this, they will go looking for belonging elsewhere—and the wings of a Dragon can feel warm!
At the heart of this is attachment. Positive, consistent relationships with adults and peers are one of the strongest protective factors in a young person’s life. When boys feel securely connected, they’re more likely to develop empathy, resilience, and a sense of responsibility toward others. This is what underpins prosocial behaviour—not lectures or quick fixes, but relationships that are built over time. When those attachments are missing or fragile, we tend to see the opposite: withdrawal, anger, risk-taking, or a search for identity in places that don’t always have their best interests at heart.
So the question becomes: what are we building for them instead?
At Wild n Well Outdoors, this is exactly what we focus on. Through nature-based sessions, bushcraft, and small group work, we create spaces where boys and young men can belong without pressure, build trust with consistent adults, and experience challenge in a safe and supportive way.
Around a fire, in the woods, or working together on practical tasks, something shifts. Conversations happen more naturally. Defences come down. Young people begin to feel part of something. And from there, growth follows—confidence, communication, resilience, and a stronger sense of self.
This isn’t about “fixing” boys. It’s about giving them what they need: connection, community, and positive relationships that help them move toward being grounded, prosocial, and fulfilled adults.
If you’re a school, parent, or organisation noticing boys who are struggling, disengaged, or searching for belonging in the wrong places, Wild n Well Outdoors offers targeted group programmes and one-to-one support designed to build connection, confidence, and community in a way that sticks.
If you want to explore how this could support the young people you work with, get in touch.
